Iron Skies Demo is a free retro propeller-plane shoot ’em up on Steam from 171Dev that dropped July 23, 2026 and is currently on version 0.1. The demo stage plays like a game straight out of the late 80s and carries real nostalgic value for that reason. Choose one of three planes, clear air and ground enemies, grab power-ups, and fight the end-of-stage boss with fully predictable patterns.

The short music loop undercuts the fun and needs another 30 to 45 seconds before it stops feeling distracting. Keyboard controls are rough if you prefer the keyboard. They get much better once you plug in something like an Xbox 360 Rock Candy controller. The game would benefit from proper WASD movement instead of arrow keys, plus Return for bombs and Space for shooting.

Worth checking if you like classic arcade shmups and want to see where the full game is heading.
